We’re super pleased to announce that Saturday, November 22nd, that’s the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we’ll be taking on Clapton for the first time in Collective’s history. It’s Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos, curated by the master Rick Lollar.
It’s Derek and the Dominoes 1970 masterpiece. The band, led of course, by Mr. Eric Clapton, also featured Duane Alman playing slide guitar on 11 of the tracks. Though initially a critical flop, dismissed for being inconsistent, the album is now seen by most as Clapton’s best work. VH1 puts the album 89th on its list of best albums of all time. And critic Robert Cristgau considers Layla to be the 3rd greatest album of the 1970s. And that was a pretty decent decade for music. Come hear why.
True, November is not traditionally thought of as the lovers’ month. But “Layla” is a love song that defies tradition. Indeed, Clapton wrote it about his obsession with Pattie Boyd, wife of his friend George Harrison. The result is one of the most tortured and historic love songs of all time. Come requited and unrequited lovers. Come feel the burn.
